In this lesson, students will learn how to use informational text features, including heading, photograph, and caption.

Students will be able to locate information by using text features.
Students will review the text features, photograph, caption, bold words, diagram, glossary, and table of contents. They will look at a few different text features and identify each one. Discuss why text features are important.
Students will drag captions to their corresponding photographs. Next, students will read a passage titled, "When Trees Get Thirsty," and answer questions about the text features. They will drag labels of body parts to a photograph. Students will also read a passage titled, "Chameleons Are Reptiles," and answer questions. They will read passages and create headings for them. Then, students will read a passage about African elephants.
Students will respond to ten multiple-choice and true/false questions.
Students will recall:
- What are some examples of text features?
- Why are text features important?
Lastly, students will find informational text features in their own books. They will also write their own newspaper article using at least three text features from the lesson.
