In this lesson, students will learn how to a combination of sources, including personal experiences or the experiences of someone they know and articles. They will use these sources to answer questions. They will practice with a variety of texts, including anecdotes, postcards, and recipes.

Students will share about trips they have been on and what they saw. They will discuss why it is important to gather information from several sources.
Show examples of sources that can advise about a trip to South Dakota. In one, a student in the lesson talks about how his cousins visited South Dakota. In the other, a student uses the internet to look up fossils in Hot Springs, South Dakota. They will then read that short article and several statements. They will determine if each statement is based on experience or the online source.
Then they will read a postcard from the student's cousin Leo about his trip to Custer State Park. Students will answer questions about the postcard. Next, they will watch a video about Mount Rushmore and answer some questions. They will then look at pictures of food and determine which are healthy food choices. They will also read a recipe for berry smoothies and answer questions about it.
Review how to use experiences in conjunction with sources to answer questions. Students will answer 10 questions.
Students will recall what they learned in this lesson. Lastly, they will share an experience cooking and then answer questions about a recipe.
