In this lesson, students will learn how to use and identify dialogue and description in narrative texts. They will add dialogue to stories to include more detail. They will also learn the "show" don't "tell" strategy.

Students will discuss the genre of narrative writing.
Explain that writers use techniques such as dialogue and description to develop their stories and make them more interesting to readers. Define dialogue and description and review how writers use it. Students will preview examples of both.
Students will read several different types of short narrative texts. For each text, they will identify examples of dialogue and description, as well as answer questions that require them to think about how the examples developed the story and/or characters. Students will be given short story prompts and will be asked to include dialogue and description to further develop the story. For example, the first text is about two best friends and students will come up with dialogue to add to the story.
Students will review how dialogue and description can be used in narrative writing with 10 questions.
