In this lesson, students will practice determining the time difference/elapsed time between digital clocks with whole and half hours. Students will be given the skills to find the time that has passed between two events and will learn to utilize number lines and t-charts to calculate elapsed time. Then, they will complete several activities in which they practice solving elapsed time word problems.

Students will be able to use a variety of strategies to tell what the difference is between two digital clocks with whole and half hours.
Students will review how to read a digital clock and list 3 instances in which they have used a digital clock to tell time.
The lesson will begin with an explanation of elapsed time and a discussion of why students think knowing how to calculate elapsed time is an important skill they should have. Instruct students on how to properly utilize number lines and t-charts when calculating the time elapsed between two events and model these strategies with examples. Check that students understand by having them practice with various word problems including helping Sara the Superhero determine the time elapsed by filling out a provided number line.
Students respond to ten multiple-choice questions. They will read two digital clocks and determine the correct time difference.
Students will complete an activity in which they imagine they are baking cupcakes, cookies, and a cake for their birthday. They will calculate the time it takes for each to bake in the oven.
