CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.K.6
Students will be able to name and understand the roles of the author and illustrator.
Students will discuss their favorite books and describe the pictures in them. Discuss what authors and illustrators do and why they are important.
Show students keywords that signify where they can find the authors' and illustrators' names on a book, usually on the cover. They will practice reading these keywords, including "Written by" and "Pictures by." Ask students: "Can the author and illustrator be the same person?" Students will look at examples of keywords for a person who is both the author and illustrator, such as, "Written and illustrated by."
Students will respond to ten questions in which they review the roles of author and illustrator and identify authors and illustrators.
Students will recall what they learned in the lesson:
- What is an author?
- What is an illustrator?
- Why is an author and illustrator important?
- Can an author and illustrator be the same person?
Students will answer the prompt: "If you could be an author or illustrator (or both), which would you be? Why?"
