CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.1.5
Students will be able to use headings to find key details in a text.
Students will drag words, like "title" and "author," to label a book cover. Explain that headings are titles found at the top of pages, and subheadings are titles that are underneath a heading. Read an example with headings and subheadings. Students will read a short paragraph and locate the heading and subheading. Discuss as a class why it is important to learn about headings and subheadings.
Students will match headings to their related sentences. They will also read several passages about various topics, including apples, bugs, cupcakes, the first day of school, and bananas, and identify the headings and subheadings. Ask students about the information they can get from subheadings.
Students will respond to ten multiple-choice questions.
Students will recall what they learned:
- Why are headings and subheadings important?
- What can you use headings and subheadings for?
They will work in pairs to come up with a heading and subheading for a passage. They will also do an activity looking for headings and subheadings in informational books around the classroom.
