In this lesson, students will learn about digital clocks and how to utilize them to tell time to quarter hours. They will learn how to tell time to the quarter-hour, using the phrases ‘quarter past,’ ‘half-past,’ and ‘quarter to.’ Students will complete several activities to test their understanding of the concepts. They will practice writing and reading various quarter hours and will match the digital clocks to the correct times in a puzzle matching activity.

Introduce students to quarter hours and explain that each quarter is equal to 15 minutes.
Discuss different ‘quarter past’ examples and have students listen to how to properly pronounce each phrase. Continue the lesson by having students help “Fred the farmer” read different times, reading them aloud, and writing them down. Explain the phrases “half past” and “Quarter to.” Guide students in completing an activity in which they drag the correct clock to match the correct time phrase. Then, continue by having students complete a puzzle matching activity in which they match the digital clock to the correct time. Conclude the lesson by having students utilize an adjustable clock and take turns with their classmates reading and writing the time they see.
