Students will learn several strategies to memorize the times 9 multiplication table. They are introduced to 3 strategies, each followed by practice activities.
CCSS.Math.Content.3.OA.B.5
Students will be able to solve times 9 multiplication facts.
Using a guided discussion, students are encouraged to recognize that multiplication is a way to add quickly.
The lesson first teaches the strategy of using a times ten fact to solve a times 9 fact. Using a visual of 10 groups of 3, students can see that a ×9 fact is taking away one group of 3. Practice is provided using the computation 10 × 3 = 30; 30 - 3 = 27 so 9 × 3 = 27. The next strategy uses the plus 9 addition facts, as they are the multiples of 9. To solve 9 × 7, students will think of the digit right before the 7, in this case, 6. The number added to 6 that equals nine (3) completes the answer- 9 × 7 = 63. The third strategy has students use their hands to solve a times 9 fact. A video shows the steps to this technique.
Students respond to ten multiple-choice and true/false questions.
Students will read clues to figure out a mystery number. The mystery numbers are all multiples of nine.
