In this lesson, students will learn the rules for silent letters kn, mb, and gn. They will do a series of activities, such as "fishing for words" and "coloring in balloons," to practice identifying the silent letters.

Students will be able to spell and read words with the silent letters kn, mb, and gn.
Students will think about times when they have needed to be silent. They will match ending sounds to pictures, like "l" to "shell." Students will listen to words with silent letters, like "gnome" and "limb." Discuss and explain why it is important to know silent letter patterns.
Students will drag kn words, such as "knit" and "know," to fill in the blanks in sentences. Next, they will use picture clues to complete sentences with mb words. They will then fish for gn words. They will also determine which silent letters words have by coloring them purple for gn, yellow for kn, and blue for mb. Students will determine whether the given words have a silent letter. then, they will the silent letter rules to the signs of the silent letter playground.
Students will respond to 10 questions which ask students to apply the rules learned about silent letters.
Students will recall what they learned about words with the silent letters kn, mb, and gn. They will do a fun activity and search for a hidden word with silent letters.
