In this lesson, students learn about what it takes to properly take care of their teeth. This includes brushing twice a day, flossing daily, using mouthwash, and visiting the dentist periodically. They will learn how to prevent cavities and plaque and in the end, they will create their own dental calendars to track their dental hygiene tasks.
Learning objective
Students will be able to explain in their own words why it’s important to take care of their teeth.
Introduction
Students look at the pictures and identify the dentist. Ask students if they know what dentists do. Next, look at the picture of a mouth and see if students can name the different parts of the mouth: the tongue, the gums, and the teeth.
Instruction
Describe each part of the mouth and its function. Explain that students can keep their mouths clean by brushing their teeth, flossing, and using mouthwash. Next, go over the 3:2:1 rule and explain what plaque and cavities are. Discuss dentist check-ups, how often you should visit and what they’re like. You should describe some of the tools used and relieve some of the nerves that come with a dentist visit. Be sure to emphasize that no matter what, all smiles are different and beautiful. Some people have braces, different colored teeth, gaps, and other traits. What matters most is how well our teeth and mouths work for us, not their appearance.

Closing
Students will create and design their own dental calendar that includes the month, days of the week, and dates for the entire month. They can decorate their calendars and leave space for each date to add images for each oral hygiene task they complete. These include brushing, flossing, using mouthwash, and visiting your dentist.
