In this lesson, students will learn short and long vowel sounds. They will listen and identify words with each vowel sound and think of other words that fit the pattern.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RF.1.2a
Students will be able to identify and say short and long vowel sounds.
Students will review the five vowels: A, E, I, O, and U.
The lesson will explain long vowel sounds ("when a vowel says its name") and show some examples of them in words, like "go" and "hope." The lesson will also explain short vowel sounds used in words like "at" and "egg."
Students will say words with long and short A sounds. They will highlight words with short A sounds in red and words with long A sounds in blue. They will do this series of activities with the rest of the vowels.
Review short and long vowel sounds in a set of ten questions. Students are given questions in which they must identify the long vowel sound between two words, such as "flute" and "pet." Students will also identify words that have short or long sound from a group of words. For example, they will identify which word has a short vowel sound from this group of words: "hue," "cup," "flute," and "mule."
Students will recall the short and long vowel sounds, as well as examples of each. In pairs, they will name as many words with short vowel sounds as they can. To close the lesson, students will sort words into long and short vowel groups, and write a sentence using each given word.
