CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.1.5
Students will be able to understand and use various text features to locate key facts or information in a text.
Students will identify the parts of a book, including the cover, author, illustrator, title, and picture. Go over the different text features: photograph, caption, bold text, diagram, and heading. Show examples for each in the lesson. Explain why it is important to understand text features.
Introduce these text features to your students: glossary, table of contents, diagram, headings, and bold print. Students will look at examples of each. They will then match the examples to the text features, as well as identify the text features that they see. Next, they will read passages about ladybugs and answer questions about the text features.
Students will respond to ten multiple-choice and true/false questions.
Students will recall what they learned:
- What are some examples of text features?
- Why are text features important?
Students will take turns finding text features in nonfiction books.
