In this lesson, students will learn how to use imagery in their writing. First, they will review the 5 senses and read passages that include imagery. They will look for the sensory details. Then they will read sentences and add imagery to those phrases. Finally, they will use sensory language to write about a provided image.

Learning objective

Students will be able to identify examples of imagery and practice using imagery in their writing.

Introduction

Students will review the 5 senses. They will discuss something they did over summer vacation and try to include all 5 senses in their descriptions. Explain that imagery is the use of sensory language and descriptive details.

Instruction

Students will look at a picture of a kitten and expand on the sentence, "I pet an unusual kitten today," using imagery. They will read two sentences and circle words that help them visualize the kitten, as well as identify which senses the writer appealed to. Students will also look at a picture of a pizza and do the same. Next, students will read a passage about making a collage. They will underline the details that help them visualize the collage. They will also read a paragraph about the Super Bowl and underline details. They will draw a picture that represents what they visualized while reading the passage. Then, students will read sentences and write paragraphs using imagery to expand on the phrases.

Quiz

Students will answer ten questions in which they review their knowledge of imagery and define imagery in given texts .

Closing

Students will recall what they learned in this lesson by answering the following questions:
- Why do writers use imagery?
- How can you incorporate imagery into your writing?

Lastly, students will spin the wheel to pick a sense and use sensory language to create a mental picture of a fireplace.
