The who, what, where, when, why, and how of a text gives readers a framework by which to gather the most important details of a piece of writing.
In this lesson, students practice identifying these essential details. They are given short prompts with the task of pulling out the six core details.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.2.1
Students will be able to identify and answer the who, what, where, when, why, and how of a text.
Students will look at a picture of kids playing outside and answer the questions: "Who is in the picture? What are they doing? Where are they? When is this happening?" Explain why asking the 5Ws and How about a text can help students understand the text better.
Show students the questions they can ask while reading. Students will read a passage about a pet adoption day. They will answer Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How questions. Next, they will read a passage about a school spelling bee and highlight important parts of the passage. They will then read sentences and fill in the blanks with words that answer the essential questions. Finally, students read a passage about a dance recital. They will drag answers to the correct question box.
Students are given ten questions. One word in a given sentence is in bold, and students are asked to identify which of the core six details the word describes.
The closing activity asks students to pick a very popular story, such as the Three Little Pigs or Hansel & Gretel, and identify the 5 W's and how of that story.
