General

In this lesson, students will use their prior knowledge of prefixes and suffixes to learn derivational suffixes, like "-ness," "-ful," and "-able." They will complete several different activities to understand and use different suffixes.

Standards

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RF.3.3a

Learning objective

Students will be able to identify and know meanings of derivational suffixes.

Introduction

Students will review prefixes, such as re- and un-. They will also review suffixes, like -ful, -less, and -able.

Instruction

Students will look at root words that are separated from suffixes and match the suffixes to the root words. They will drag words with suffixes to their matching definitions. They will also read words, like "care," and add the suffixes, -ful or -less, to make new words (e.g., "careful" or "careless"). Next, students will match suffixes with their meanings.

Quiz

In ten questions, students will review what prefixes and suffixes are and practice the suffixes covered in this lesson.

Closing

Students will recall what they learned about and play a spin the wheel game about suffixes.
