Students learn about the impact of deforestation on the planet and its species. They will also be able to come up with possible solutions to deforestation and explore an interactive map to see the extent of deforestation around the world.

Learning Objective
Students will be able to explain what deforestation is, describe its effects, and list possible solutions.
Introduction
Have students discuss the importance of trees. Why do we need them? What would happen if there were no more trees? Introduce the topic of deforestation, then watch the video and discuss the information presented.
Instruction
Begin by describing some of the causes of deforestation like agriculture and construction. Next, explain the serious effects of deforestation like climate change and the destruction of animal habitats. Then discuss what people can do to help alleviate deforestation. Have students read the statements and decide if it describes a cause, effect, or solution for deforestation. Click on the covers to reveal the answers. After this, read the passage about the effect of deforestation on biodiversity and habitat loss. Then have students drag the impacted animals to the box. Finally, split the class into groups and assign each a different solution. Have them participate in a debate in which they argue about which solution is the most effective. You might have students do some research for this activity.
