In this lesson, students will be introduced to commas. They will learn that commas are used to separate different parts of the date. They will engage in multiple activities to practice placing commas in the date.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.1.2c
Students will be able to use commas when writing a date.
With a partner, students will look at the date circled on the calendar and write the date. Explain that commas are used in dates to separate the day of the wee, the month and day of the month, and the year. Commas make dates easier to read.
Explain that the comma goes between the day and the year. The day of the week can also go at the beginning of the date. After going over this, students will look at several dates without commas and place commas where they belong in the date. Next, they will rearrange parts of the date and put them in order with the commas in the correct spots. Students will be given dates (starting with just a month and day, working up to include the day of the week and year) to write using commas in the appropriate spots. Students will then listen to dates write them on the provided lines.
Students will review how to write dates with commas with 10 questions.
Have students recall when tot use commas when writing the date. They will write the current day's date with the day of the week, the month, the day of the month, and the year. Lastly, they will work in small groups to write down every member of the group's birthdays.
