Students will be able to explain the importance of celebrating Asian Pacific American Heritage Month.
Students will be introduced to Asian Pacific American Heritage Month: what it is and how it is celebrated.
Asians and Pacific Islanders are a very diverse group of people! Students will learn about some languages spoken in nearly 50 different countries. They will look at two maps of Asia and name countries they recognize. They will also learn about other Asian countries.
Next, students will learn about the important inventions by Asian or Pacific Islanders, such as paper and umbrellas. They will also learn about some foods that are eaten in Asia and the Pacific islands. Then, they will be introduced to notable Asian Americans and Pacific Islander Americans, including Michelle Kwan, Bruce Lee, and Patsy Mink. Students will reflect on how these contributions by Asians and Pacific Islanders have changed their lives and the world.
Then, students will learn about some inequalities, injustices, and unfair treatment to Asian American and Pacific Islander Americans' history, including the Chinese Exclusion Act and Japanese internment camps. They will also learn about how peace was restored and how Japan gave the US lots of cherry blossom trees as a symbol of friendship. Students will also discuss how stereotyping can lead to bullying in schools or all the way to unjust laws in our governments.
Review the achievements of Asian and Pacific Islander Americans and the importance of diversity with 4 multiple-choice, 3 true/false, and 3 discussion questions.
Students will recall what they learned in this lesson and explain why celebrating Asian Pacific American Heritage Month is important. Lastly, students can learn more about Asian and Pacific Islander culture by researching fun facts. They can also even pick a country that interests them to research.
Encourage students to learn more about Asian and Pacific Islander countries and territories. There is a lot to explore! They can also learn more about the most impactful Asians and Asian American & Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) in culture with the A100 List.
