In this lesson, students learn how to show respect toward the American flag. They will learn about the Pledge of Allegiance and begin to understand its purpose and general meaning.
Students will be able to recite the Pledge of Allegiance and describe the parts of the American flag (stars and stripes).
First, show students some flags from around the world. Ask if they’ve seen any of these flags before. Where have they seen them? Why do they think flags are important?
Show students the American flag and ask them to share what they observe. Share some facts about the flag like the 50 stars, one for each state, the 13 stripes, and the different colors. Read the poem, “I Love my Flag” with the class. After this, introduce the Pledge of Allegiance. Have students stand and recite the pledge together. Explain why the pledge is important and what it means. Tell students that to show respect, they should place their right hand over their heart and remove their hats when saying the pledge. Next, define specific words from the pledge like “allegiance,” “liberty,” and “justice.” What do these words mean? Finally, have students drag the missing words to complete the Pledge of Allegiance.
Check student understanding with ten multiple-choice questions about the flag and the Pledge of Allegiance.
Ask if students can recite the pledge on their own. Then students will complete the word search. They can use the pencil tool or shape tool to mark the words. Words include, “America,” “Pledge,” and “Flag.” Answers are under the cover.
