General

Students can add double numbers together to a maximum total of 10.

Relevance

It is important that students are able to add doubles, so they can calculate faster.

Introduction

The interactive whiteboard shows balls with the numbers from one to ten. The students must determine the sequence of the balls and drag them to their places.

Development

Explain to students that when you add two numbers which are the same, you double the number. You can show this by having them count the stars. The students calculate the sums using the images on the interactive whiteboard. They can count the objects. For the images with the barrels and ladybugs, ask students to say what the addition problem is before they solve for the answer. Next, you can show what a double looks like with abstract numbers. You can show this using the image of the watering cans. The following problems you can discuss one by one, and explain the steps. The students calculate the abstract addition problems. First with visual support, then without visual support, where they must drag the answer to the correct place.

To check that students understand adding doubles to a total of ten, you can ask the following questions:
- What do you do when you double a number?
- What is the sum of 3 + 3?

Guided practice

Students first practice adding doubles with visual support where they can count objects. They then practice adding with only numbers given.

Closing

Repeat the goal and discuss why it is useful to be able to add doubles. Next give every student a number card with the number 1,2,3,4 or 5. Students walk around the class and look for a classmate with their double. When they find their double, they must find their total together, and then get a new number card from the teacher.

Teaching tips

If students have difficulty with this goal, they can make use of blocks or other manipulatives. They can make groups of objects to represent the numbers and count the objects.

Instruction materials

Number cards to 5 and blocks or other manipulatives.
